Notes:

STH-190 is known as Capitol Drive for its entire length.

History:

Prior to 1947, Capitol Dr from the Village of Pewaukee easterly through Milwaukee to Shorewood was designated as part of US-16, stretching across the state as part of the Detroit-to-Yellowstone routing of that US Highway. Also at that time, STH-19 was one of three highways running from Madison to Milwaukee (STH-30 and US-18 were the other two), running concurrently with US-16 from Watertown to Pewaukee and with US-18/STH-30 from Waukesha into Milwaukee. In 1947, STH-19 was scaled back to end in Watertown and the sole non-concurrent stretch of that highway from Pewaukee to US-18/STH-30 at Goerkes Corners northeast of Waukesha was redesignated as a part of a relocated US-16, which then continued easterly with US-18 & STH-30 into downtown Milwaukee. This left Capitol Dr from Pewaukee to Shorewood—which had been designated US-16—without a state trunk highway designation. The STH-190 routing was applied to that route and has remained ever since. While Capitol Dr has been upgraded greatly since 1947, it has remained in the same place locationally.

STH-193

Western Terminus:

Eastern Terminus:

STH-80 three miles north of Muscoda, nine miles south of Richland Center

Length:

1.42 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-193

Notes:

STH-193, a short connector between STH-60 and STH-80 in southern Richland Co, is the ninth shortest state trunk highway in Wisconsin (fifth shortest, when spurs and similar routes are excluded).

WisDOT officially considers STH-193 to be a north-south route, while it is classified here as an east-west highway. The maximum north-south variance along the highway is approximately 0.7 mile, while the east-west variance is only slightly longer at about 0.75 mile.

History:

STH-193 debuted in 1947 when the 20 miles of CTH-A in Florence Co from STH-139 west of Tipler easterly to STH-101 near Florence was transferred to state control and designated as STH-193. It is unclear if STH-193 was co-signed along STH-101 for the three additional miles into Florence, however. Within two years, though, STH-70 was extended easterly to the Tipler area, then easterly supplanting the STH-193 designation in its entirety to Florence.

History:

The present iteration of STH-193 debuted along its present route soon after the first one was decommissioned in 1949. The only change in the route of this highway over the decades has been a slight relocation of the Mill Creek bridge just north of STH-60.

STH-194
Former State Trunkline

Fmr. W. Terminus:

STH-27 eleven miles south of Ladysmith

Length:

11.32 miles

Map:

Route Map of Former STH-194

Notes:

On October 3, 2005, the entire length of STH-194 in Rusk and Taylor Cos was transferred to county control, designated CTH-D. This essentially completes a process begun nearly 15 years earlier when the easternmost 6.5 miles of the highway was transferred to local control, leaving an odd dangling route leading to "nowhere." The Taylor Co Highway Dept approved the transfer on July 21, 2004, with discussions having begun in late-2003.

History:

In 1948, US-14 was temporarily rerouted north of Janesville to run due easterly from its former alignment along N Washington St to meet US-51 north of the city, then turned southerly back to its former alignment downtown. In 1949, US-14 was restored to its pre-1948 route into Janesville from the northwest along Washington St and the short spur that had been designated US-14 to US-51 was assigned the STH-194 designation. Soon after, in 1952, the current US-14 bypass of Janesville was completed, and the new STH-194 designation was supplanted by US-14 and disappeared for almost a decade. Then in 1961, all of CTH-D from STH-27 in Rusk Co to STH-73 at Jump River in Taylor Co was transferred to state control and designated STH-194.

In c.1991-92, WisDOT transferred the easternmost 6.5 miles of the highway in Taylor Co to the county, which then transferred much of that to the Town of McKinley for local maintenance, with the exception of 1/4 mile which was designated as CTH-H. What was odd about this particular transfer was that a state highway ended at a county trunk highway "in the middle of nowhere," with apologies to the residents of northwestern Taylor Co. Instead of truncating the highway at an incorporated community, such a Sheldon just to the west, it ended at a "T"-intersection with CTH-H. Also, it was odd that a single mile of this highway had been left in Taylor Co; normally, the entire length of a highway within a particular jurisdiction—Taylor Co in this instance—is transferred.
