STH-180

Southern Terminus:

STH-64 on the west Marinette city limit at cnr of Roosevelt Rd & Hall Ave

Northern Terminus:

US-141/Main St on the south Wausaukee village limit

Length:

30.42 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-180

Notes:

STH-180, which could be considered a 'cut-off' route between STH-64 at Marinette and US-141 at Wausaukee, basically replaced a different 'cut-off' routing farther west. Until 1948, STH-158 ran from STH-64 north and west to US-141 at Crivitz. Continued in "History" below...

History:

In 1948, STH-158 in its entirety was given back to county control as CTH-W. Simultaneously, CTH-C from Marinette to Wausaukee was transferred from county to state control and designated STH-180. With the exception of the "softening" of some of the highway's sharper curves over the years, STH-180 has remained largely unchainged since 1948. One change, though, did remove STH-180 from Riverside Dr within the City of Marinette, transferring it to its present alignment via Roosevelt Rd on the western edge of the city.

STH-60 at jct CTH-NN (cnr Washington Ave & Washington St) near Cedarburg

Length:

21.44 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-181

Notes:

In Milwaukee Co, STH-181 runs via 84th St in West Allis and Milwaukee, Glenview Ave, Harwood Ave, Harmonee Ave, and Wauwatosa Rd in Wauwatosa, and 76th St for the remainder of the time back in Milwaukee. It runs along Wauwautosa Rd for its entire length in Ozaukee Co with the exception of the northernmost 2/10th mile, where it traverses Washington Ave.

History:

In 1947, the 4.5 miles of CTH-P/76th St in what is now the City of Milwaukee from STH-55/Fond du Lac Ave (present-day STH-145) northerly to STH-74/STH-100/Brown Deer Rd (now just STH-100) was transferred to state control and designated STH-181. A year later in 1948, STH-181 was extended northerly from Brown Deer Rd to STH-167/Mequon Rd in today's City of Mequon and southerly via 76th St to a new southern terminus at US-41/Appleton Ave. The highway was again extended in 1952, this time southerly by 5.9 miles from US-41/Appleton Ave to STH-15/National Ave in West Allis. When the STH-15 designation was removed from National Ave in West Allis in c.1988, STH-181 was scaled back by 4/10th mile to its present southern terminus at STH-59/Greenfield Ave.

In the early-1990s, Wauwatosa Rd from STH-167/Mequon Rd northerly in the Cities of Mequon and Cedarburg, and the Town of Cedarburg in Ozaukee Co was transferred to from local to state control as a part of an agreement with WisDOT. The agreement also transferred STH-57 from STH-167/Mequon Rd to I-43/STH-32 northeast of Grafton to local control. Wauwatosa Rd from STH-167 northerly to Washington Ave (formerly STH-143) was designated as an extension of STH-181, as was the short stretch of Washington Ave from Wauwatosa Rd to STH-60 at Five Corners. The exact date of this transfer, however, is unclear. The former routing of STH-57 through Grafton remained on WisDOT's official highway maps through the 1995/96 issue, while the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel has stated in stories, "In 1992, the state transferred control of the road to the municipalities, dropping its highway designation." Similarly, STH-181 did not appear on the official map until the 1997/98 edition, although it was present in current form in the 1996 edition of the Official State Trunk Highway System Maps.

STH-182

Western Terminus:

STH-13 in Park Falls at cnr 1st St S & 4th Ave

Eastern Terminus:

US-51 at Manitowish

Length:

33.41 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-182

Notes:

STH-182 and STH-47 run concurrently for the last four miles of each of the two routes. This may be explained by fact that the concurrent STH-182/STH-47 route was originally a concurrent CTH-G/CTH-F routing. In 1948, CTH-G became STH-182, while CTH-F became STH-47 in 1952, making what had once been a two-country trunk highway concurrent route into a two-state trunk highway concurrency.

History:

STH-182 debuted in 1948 along what had been designated CTH-G from Park Falls to Manitowish. Except for the straightening of some of the curves along its route, STH-182 has remained relatively unchanged since.

Notes:

STH-184 is no longer a state trunk highway.

History:

STH-184 debuted in 1947 along the northernmost 12 miles of Rock County's CTH-H from STH-11 to STH-59, and remained relatively unchanged for its entire existence. The entire length of STH-184 was transferred from state to county control on October 4, 1999, once again designated as CTH-H. This transfer coincided with the extension of STH-104 along the Green/Rock Co line to the west.

STH-186

Southern Terminus:

STH-13/STH-73 three miles south of Vesper, eight miles northwest of Wisconsin Rapids

Northern Terminus:

US-10 in Auburndale at cnr Arpin Rd & Main St

Length:

15.01 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-186

Notes:

STH-186 is a secondary highway running north-south through central Wood Co.

The length of STH-186 is scheduled to be reduced by approximately 1/2 mile at Auburndale in the next decade with the proposed relocation and upgrading of US-10 between Stevens Point and Marshfield. At Auburndale, the new US-10 bypass will run along the southern limits of the village and interchange with STH-186 there. The portion of STH-186 from the proposed bypass northerly into Auburndale is scheduled to be turned back to county control at that time. [See Map of Proposed Changes.]

History:

STH-186 debuted in 1947 along what had been designated CTH-M from STH-13/STH-73 to US-10. This highway has remained relatively unchanged since.

STH-187

Southern Terminus:

Northern Terminus:

STH-156 five miles north of Leeman

Length:

13.87 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-187

Notes:

The potential transfer of the entire route of STH-187 in Outagamie Co to county control was discussed in February 2006 in connection with a similar transfer of part of STH-76 elsewhere in the county. It can easily be assumed the remaining portion of STH-187 in neighboring Shawano Co is also on the chopping block as well. It is unclear what the timeframe is for this potential transfer.

The Village of Shiocton website describes this highway as "a lightly traveled and highly scenic roadway paralleling the Wolf River northward to the Shawano area."

History:

This highway dates from 1947 when CTH-B from Shiocton in Outagamie Co to Shawano in Shawano Co was turned over to state control and designted STH-187. In c.1985-86, STH-156 was rerouted from Outagamie Co to run easterly through Shawano Co simultaneously to the truncation of STH-187 at the new STH-156 junction west of Navarino. All of STH-187 north of STH-156 was turned back to county control and designated CTH-K. The formerly concurrent STH-156/STH-187 segment from Leeman northerly retained the STH-187 designation.

Length:

11.88 miles

Map:

Route Map of STH-188

Notes:

In the past, WisDOT had mapped several corridors in which potential improvements to the route of STH-188 had been proposed. Three improvements were mapped in Columbia Co between STH-60 and STH-113. First, the department wanted to straighten STH-188 beginning at the Selwood Dr intersection running northeasterly for approximately 1/2 mile, rejoining existing STH-188 near Theresa Rd, removing two sharp curves from the route. The second mapped corridor began at the curve at Fjord Rd and ran northerly (just west of Unke Rd), then turned easterly (just north of Unke Rd) to rejoin the existing highway at Rausch Rd. The final improvement aimed to remove the rather sharp set of curves where STH-118 hugs a cove in the Wisconsin River near East Harmon Rd and CTH-V. Here a bridge was proposed to cross the cove, largely eliminating the curve. As these three "mapped corridors" were removed from official sources in 2000, it can be assumed WisDOT no longer has intentions to go forward with those planned improvements.

History:

In c.1942, the State Highway Commission relocated the route of STH-78 from the west side of the Wisconsin River to the eastern shore from Sauk City to the Merrimac Ferry, where STH-78 joined STH-113 to cross the ferry into Merrimac and the existing route of STH-78 on that side of the river. The former route of STH-78 on the opposite side of the river was removed from the state trunk highway system, possibly in relation to its proximity to the Badger Army Ammunition Plant (which was constructed in 1942) and the wartime conditions present in 1942. In 1947 after World War II, though, the pre-war alignment of STH-78 was restored and that designation was moved back to the west shore of the river where it remains today. In its place on the east side, what had been STH-78 for from 1942 to 1947 was retained in the highway system and designated as STH-188. Little about the route has changed since.
