Wisconsin Highways

Wisconsin Highways Master List: 1917-Present

The "Wisconsin Highways Master List" is a complete list of every state trunk highway designation ever used in Wisconsin, from 1917 to today. This list was concieved out of many requests for information on old highway designations no longer in use in the state, such as "Was there ever a STH-1?" or "I heard about a US-118. Was there such a thing?"

This page lists each designation in numerical order, from 1 through 894, and is separated into listings generally corresponding to the setup of the Wisconsin Highways website (e.g. 1-9, 10-19, etc.) for easier reference. Five 'types' of highways or designations are included: current, un-signed, future and former highways, as well as those designations which have never been used to date. Each is color-coded, as shown in the "Highway Status Key" below. Those Current state highways include a link to the regular listing on the website. The current few Un-Signed highways are also linked to a listing on the website. For those Formerly-Used designations, a short description of the former highway is included for referencial purposes unless the designation was recently retired, then a link to its listing elsehwere in the website is included. Often, links to current highway listings are also included. Never-Used designations, of course, feature no description, as they have never existed in the system.

With an undertaking of this magnitude, there may be a designation or two which have been overlooked or mis-stated. I have combed through dozens of sources and literally hundreds of old road and street maps, so the information contained on this page is reasonably complete and accurate. However, if you should find any information which is incorrect, or if you know of a designation which has not been included here, please drop the webmaster a line. (Spam filter in effect.)

MILWAUKEE: This designation has been reported via RVDroz' US Highways website and is included on 1967 and 1971 Rand McNally road maps, but has never appeared on any official WisDOT maps of any kind. In the 1960s, US-18 departed downtown Milwaukee via Milwaukee St through the Third Ward, southwest via Young St, then southeast along Erie St, east along Polk St before turning northerly via N Harbor Dr to the Municipal Pier, where US-18 terminated. (Michigan Ave did not connect through from downtown to the pier at the time.) While the Lake Freeway and Lake Interchange were under construction in the late-1960s and early-70s, this "ALT US-18" may have been posted to provide an alternate route for US-18 to avoid the construction. It seems to have continued easterly along State St from Milwaukee Ave to Prospect St, south on Prospect to Mason St, east on Mason to Lincoln Memorial Dr, then southerly along Lincoln Memorial to US-18 at the Municipal Pier. It is unknown how "official" this route designation was or whether it was merely a temporary alternate posted by the city or state during the construction.

An original 1917-18 state trunk highway, running generally along the I-43 corridor between Delavan and Beloit. In 1919, extensions added mileage on both ends of the route. On the east, STH-61 ran with STH-20 from Delavan to Elkhorn, north with STH-12, then northeasterly along the later route of STH-15 through East Troy and Mukwonago into Milwaukee. On the west, STH-61 was extended westerly along the present-day STH-81 corridor from Beloit to STH-20 (now STH-11) two miles south of Brodhead. In 1923, a further westerly extension paired STH-61 with STH-20 (again) from Brodhead to Monroe, then westerly supplanting STH-65 (along the present-day STH-81 corridor) through Argyle, Darlington, Elmo, Platteville and Lancaster, then switching to the STH-105 route from northeast of Beetown to a terminus at Cassville. "Dedicated to the past, present and future of the Wisconsin State Trunk Highway system as well as other highways and routes throughout the Badger State. This website is intended to be a clearinghouse of information on Wisconsin's highways, from easily-recognized facts to the little-known trivia. It is also meant to change as the state highway system changes."
